Lisa Merullo is an interdisciplinary artist. She began her work in photography, moved toward painting, then outdoor and indoor installation that incorporates performance. Most of her two-dimensional work has been abstract and expressionistic. Lisa spent some years in Santa Fe, NM where she began to make her own pigments from sand and clay. She is beginning to experiment with natural pigments again here in the Berkshires. Her paintings are gestural, symbolic, and simple. The early expressionist painters were always her favorite. Lisa enjoys expressing her feelings and emotions through mark-making and color. She particularly enjoys the process of making. Process to her is as equally important as the final result. Therefore her paintings are ever-changing and often result in many layers or are a result of just a sudden few marks or strokes.
The development of Lisa’s paintings originates from a connection to natural elements. Such as the earth, the water, and the sky. The return to special places involves the theme of spiritual journeys. There always has been a strong body-earth connection symbolized in her work. Evolving around the theme of death and rebirth/self healing and change. There is a distant longing conveyed in her paintings; searching for a destiny, following the call of the desert and the sea, having traveled so many miles back and forth in her life. Presently Lisa has been living in Pittsfield, Ma and has begun work again happy to have found an active art community.
